Its green leaves are characteristically elongated and edged, crowned with delicate white flowers during the flowering period. The essential oil of spearmint is produced mainly by the evaporative distillation of its leaves and has a characteristically sweet, fresh fragrance, milder than that of its relative, peppermint.
